Project: Let`s Learn!

Supplying resources to homeless children in the Kent School District with the resources they need to learn.

Problem

In spite of state funding that helps cover homeless students’ basic school needs, local schools still send out annual request for help in equipping their
classrooms with essential supplies, such as markers, erasers, writing equipment, and notepads.

Summary

I Believe in a design solution, having a positive impact and drive a successful start to many children education.

The hypothesis is that provision of school supplies can eliminate a substantial barrier to an enhanced
educational experience for kids of all age. Working with elementary schools in the Kent school district, we
researched and designed an interactive ecosystem to enable teachers to focus on teaching, not on the
acquisition of supplies.

PROCESS

RESEARCH METHODS

Having framed the all-important Design Question, was excited to try out as many research methods as possible. In the end, used the following methods to great effect:

  • 83 Survey responses (8 administrators, 35 parents, 33 teachers, 7 other)

  • 6 Competitive analyses of alternative programs

  • 5 Contextual Interviews (2 teachers, 2 PTSA members, 1 school administrator)

Design Principles

1. Do No Harm
Authenticity in design implies a genuine drive to understand our users' realities for their own benefit. This empathic approach is especially important when dealing with a vulnerable level of society.

2. Provide Value
Our solution will do only good. Yes, our design will be simple and easy to use but it will ultimately strive to make a positive impact on the educational and social landscape of our community.

3. Do the Right Thing
Using design to advocate for those with no voice, we position ourselves to offer truly customer-serving solutions with no unintended, adverse side-effects. Our hope is to establish trust and credibility within an often-neglected community.

4. Think Outside the Box
Unencumbered by what’s possible today, we will harness the power of creative thinking to develop an original design. Our solution should engage and captivate our target audience.

5. Include All
Lack of access to technology or connectivity must not prevent our users from being able to benefit from our design. Our design will be inclusive and accessible to all. It must strive to connect a diverse
community.
